Men’s Cycle Softshell Jacket

$319.00

Anyone who has ever ridden the leafy lanes of Hertfordshire, the northern-most outpost of the Chilterns, will appreciate the origins of our Classic Ultimate Softshell Jacket.  For this was the first ride piece forged here in the foothills of the Chiltern ‘Alps’, where changeable conditions and majestic Red Kites rule the roost.  Setting off in the fresh early morning dew, bathed in the dappled sunlight of the densely wooded Ashridge Estate, you might easily find yourself tackling the lung-busting Kop Hill Climb in Princes Risborough by mid-morning under azure blue skies. In other words, versatility needs to come as standard.

And it does. Every detail of this jacket has been considered at length by our design team.  From the incorporation of Merino wool in the rear panels to ensure that you are dry and warm when it is fresh, to the front fabric that is 100% waterproof, breathable and windproof for when Mother Nature doesn’t play so nice. It’s all there.

Then there are the little details.  Three rear pockets with elasticated hems have been incorporated to keep those essentials secure, while a rear tail guard drops down to protect the Bib Shorts in foul weather, retained in place by three magnetic snaps. Honestly, we could go on….

A word from founder, Stuart: “My go to jacket. If it’s jacket weather and you know you may be in for a light dowsing of rain – but not a downpour – then this is it for me. The Merino panels on the back of the jacket and sleeves ensure optimal interior climate regulation – whether it’s being used on those Sunday-first-thing rides or later in the day when the sun decides to shine. The extremes in temperature that this jacket can cope with are “insane”. Once you have it on, you will never feel the need to take it off because overheating is simply not an issue. I have every colour.”

Wow. First day out with the jacket. Close to freezing. Snow on Box Hill. Icy wind on the way back taking the wind chill to below zero. The jacket handled this with no problem. Not too hot on the climbs (zip is easy to use while climbing!) and warm on the descents. Love the pockets too. I am hooked. Will be buying more kit.

Keeping w the Ashmei tradition for amazing design and functional fabrics, the Cycle softshell is just awesome. The fit is great and had a quick spin with it once I got it. I can’t wait to take it out on a longer ride and post more feedback.

Ordered this jacket as part of the bundle with the short sleeve jersey. However, so far I’ve been wearing this with just a merino base layer underneath (+5 – +10 degrees C, but windy conditions), and it works well for Spring/Autumn temps. Would be fine in lower temps with a jersey underneath.

I especially love the rear pockets, plenty of room for tools, phone, and even a rolled up spare tubular, without it feeling bulky. Not sure how you’ve done that, but its a big plus point over my previous favourite 3 season jacket (Assos IJHabu).

I’m completely sold on the softshell idea v’s a rain jacket. This one is lighter weight so no overheating, and its much more breathable but waterproof yet enough when compared with a full waterproof shell. Also has plenty of features such as zipped pits, and drop down flap if its very wet. Maybe the cut suits me, but I’m also pleased to say it doesn’t seem to ride up – a perennial problem I found with other products such as the Rapha Hardshell, which I eventually sold as I was constantly having to pull it down at the back mid ride.

Overall very pleased – its become my go to outer layer piece now, and providing it proves its longevity I’ll look to purchase more items in due course.

This jacket is fantastic. I ride about 70-100 miles a week in all weathers and it has coped with very cold (temperature in single figures) all the way up to the early teens without the need for more than a base layer underneath (merino in the cold). The ability to release heat via the vents is excellent and means you don’t have to think too much about which jacket to wear before you get out the door.

The pocket layout is good, separate pump pocket is excellent, although the main pockets could do to be 1/2″ deeper to give you more peace of mind that your phone is safe and secure – having said that my phone is yet to spring free.

All in all – if Carlsberg did cycling jackets, they would probably ring Ashmei for a ‘white label’ version of this.

Very stylish, functional and comfortable to wear. Even on cold days the jacket was enough to keep me warm. Loved it.

Bought a red soft-shell jacket a couple of months ago and am very pleased with it. Top dollar price but also top quality. Wasn’t too sure about the white spinal stripe, but, since only my competition see it disappearing in front if them… Jury still out about the back pockets design too.

I absolutely love this product!! I have worn it in winter conditions, cold mornings and rainy days and each time it has done exactly what I needed it to. I have never overheated, a problem that I have had with many jackets in the past, and likewise have never been cold when wearing it. It is comfortable and does exactly what it promised it will.

Expensive ,but nice jacket. I had a chance to use it on few occasions in changing weather. I find it as a very versatile. piece of garment.
Jacket is very light, breathable and warm. I’m happy with it’s temperature comfort.
I like pockets . I want to point a small drawback: I don’t like mateial flaps on back in my opinion this was unnecesary addition to overall stylish piece of clothing.
Generally I’m very pleased with it! Four stars for price tag ;).

The jacket feels great in riding. A little bit too hot as the weather here is not really cold now and it still feel comfortable even I was wet through sweat. The oblique zipping style seems odd in the beginning but it looks good when riding afterward. I am really glad to have this jacket.

Absolutely love this jacket! The quality is so good! Better than Rapha i think. I bought the red jacket and its stunning! I ordered a size M as its UK sizing and its perfect race/hard training fit! Amazed at how light yet so warm it is. The customer service was also fantastic from Elliott who helped me with sizing and i recieved a free pair of merino socks and a handwritten note with the order. Fantastic all round!

This jacket is amazing! It?s lovely and soft and very tactile as well as being very, very well made. It fits perfectly and has kept the wind and rain out . The pocket design is really clever, as is the zip and cuffs. It also has an amazing ability to help regulate my temperature really well from 4-15c. I?d never heard of Ashmei and was going down the route of the usual suspects, however, I was persuaded by my local bike / running shop in Bath (Deka) to try it out. Best call ever. I?m really chuffed with my jacket and really impressed with Ashmei, such that I have bought other kit from them (have a look at the socks ? brilliant!). I will also be buying the jacket in black when it is back in stock. Anyway, I?m a convert and can?t recommend this jacket enough or Ashmei enough. Give it a go, you won?t be disappointed.

The holy grail of cycling jackets: keeps wind and water out yet is extremely breathable so you don’t overcook. Covers a very wide temperature range from below freezing to 15C. Have been riding it for over a year now and the Ultimate Softshell Jacket remains my most useful and versatile piece if cycling (as well as ski mountaineering) kit. This jacket (normally in combination with a KOM jersey) is perfect for 8-9 months of the year in the UK.

(I am 180cm tall and 78kg and am wearing Ashmei size M jacket, size S jersey and size M bib; would be helpful, if Ashmei could add that info for their models on the website)

I believe cycling tops should be highly visible, especially if primarily worn in the winter, so I bought the red softshell which combines white contrast strips and reflective strips (both are necessary as car lights are not always directed straight at you). Despite, well actually because, of these visual qualities, the jacket looks great, but its the performance that really stands out. It’s my go-to top for Autumn, Winter and Spring. It keeps me warm and dry in all but the wettest conditions, but if the sun comes out and temperatures rise in late Spring, its so breathable it feels fine. It has lots of pockets, including one for a pump, another that’s zipped and water resistant, yet another at the front for a key, one just right for my iPhone: six in total. It has a fold-down flap at the back and lots of useful details.

I have no hesitation in recommending this product.

Top all season jacket – very breathable, light and protective at the same time. Used it today combined with Ashmei short sleeve base layer and long sleeve mid layer jersey: perfect for a cold 2c winter ride. Great piece of kit

  16. Graham Lee

Overall an excellent jacket, if I could I would probably give it 4.5 stars just for some minor points/personal preference which I’ll mention below, but overall I am very impressed and will definitely invest in more Ashmei kit.

I’m 75kg, 5ft 10in tall, relatively broad shouldered and the Medium fits me fine. I usually wear Large in Castelli or Gore. I tried the Large size also but found it too loose – even with layers, the Medium works for me.

Regarding layers, I find the jacket needs one less layer when compared to my closest equivalent from Gore – below 4 degrees I always wore 3 layers inc jacket, but now can get away with 2. But, the beauty of how breathable this is means you still don’t overheat when temperature rise. Great rear ventilation and under arm zips.

The niggles…price, hard to get away from, but it is a quality piece of kit. Do I begrudge paying for it…a bit…anything over £200 should pedal for me! But would I recommend it…yes! As a personal matter of taste I think the flap on the rear is unnecessary and I am unlikely to ever use it, but a clever concept. Especially the little magnetic ‘clips’ which I would love to have one of on the front – the offset zip is excellent for comfort on the neck when done up, but the downside is that when you open the zip for ventilation, the material will flap quite a bit (one side obviously bigger than the other due to offset) and can get quite annoying if you’re pumping away as it’ll hit you on the chin. If you had a little magnetic clip like on the rear, that would go away – or maybe i just need to get smoother with my technique?!

Rain – it’s not a full waterproof (it’s not sold as one to be fair!) as I discovered when the weather man failed me completely and it absolutely tipped down, but in showery conditions it is excellent.

Rear pockets are perfectly positioned ergonomically and are really secure, yet easy to access whilst on the move.

As part of a Christmas present my wife bought me this brilliant jacket. My old Castelli Zoncolan was looking quite tired and having had a jersey from Ashmei in the past i thought i would give their jacket a go.

What a wonderful product. Dry and warm in wet conditions, Airy and cool in when it needs to be. The autumn and winter miles are safer thanks to the reflective stripes on the jacket which inspires confidence.

I was worried about the lightness of the jacket and commuting in sub zero conditions but i need not have worried. All the pockets are useful too for keys, phone and spares.

No doubt this is an expensive jacket, and so it should be, its absolutely brilliant and well crafted.

If you’re going to splash out on a jacket, make it this one. My Gabba hasn’t left the cupboard since i got this one and i can’t see that changing anytime soon. The fit is spot on to allow you a layer or two underneath without it billowing in the wind and the drop down tail catches all the worst that the road can throw up at you. Great features like the cuff that won’t let wind up, the zip openings under the armpit and the zip running to the side of the neck really do make this a delight to wear and those cold and rainy rides all the more enjoyable. Plus the hidden key holder next to the zip is a great idea! I was worried about the white stripe down the middle of the back getting grubby after time, but it’s still super bright white and nicely visible to all cars behind.

Ordered the jacket for the Australian winter. Jacket was super warm even on the coldest mornings. The fit was great and didn’t cause me to overheat or sweat. Light and a good quality jacket. Thoroughly recommend this jacket.

This jacket lives up to the high expectations in the description. Great fit and materials all of a high quality. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it and you will get loads of use out of it.
