Women’s Gilet

Runners in the know understand the importance of a great quality Gilet.  Any athletes taking on the daunting Cape Wrath Challenge in May, which traverses some of Scotland’s most exposed spots, will certainly vouch for that. In such blustery conditions, it is critical to keep your core temperature regulated. With a highly windproof and water resistant front fabric and optimal breathability at the rear, the ashmei Gilet has been designed for exactly such environments.  Think of it as a jacket without the bulk.

Features include front and shoulder wind and water resistant panels, where you need it most. At the rear of the Gilet, Merino wool panels provide optimum thermo regulation. The beauty of Merino is that it keeps you warm, but allows moisture to dissipate once your body is creating its own heat. Speaking of heating up, there are side seam zippers near the arm opening that will increase ventilation, should you need it.

Like all of our products, the fit of the Gilet is an athletic, yet true sizing. This race fit means that you will never feel material flapping in the wind and consequently cut a more aerodynamic figure. While the styling is timeless and subtle, the functionality is overt – with two discrete zipped pockets for a key, credit card, gels or cash, silicon grippers positioned at the bottom of the Gilet to keep it in position and seal in the warmth, plus rear and chest reflective stripes to make sure you are seen out on the run in low light visibility.

Ambassador and ultra runner Jess Gray says: “The Gilet was the first ashmei product that I owned.  Initially I was drawn to its modest, flattering style but it quickly became my favourite piece of kit.  I literally wear it all year round.  In winter, I layer it up and it does a great job of keeping me warm on cold, long runs.  In spring when the mornings can still be a little fresh I team it with the ashmei short sleeve jersey and it keeps out the chill but I never overheat in it.  On slightly warmer days I will wear it on its own. I love the slightly off centre zip and that when it is done up fully it provides comfort under my chin and I really like the shape as although it is fitted, the material moves with me as I run.  It is definitely my go to piece of kit even on my non-running days!”

The construction on this vest is first class. Feels like a custom tailored piece that fits true to size and sits nice and close to the body. Love the grip tape along the bottom edge which keeps the vest from riding up. Breathable, stylish and practical. Side vents are a nice touch as is the small pocket for gels on a long run. I purchased in black for the signature Ashmei red strip up the back. Tested on a 12k run on a humid morning on top of the Merino + Carbon jersey. Although the temperature climbed as I ran, I felt comfortable on account of the breath-ability of the fabric. Great layering piece to compliment your existing gear when you want an extra layer.

Just a superb, classy piece of kit. It performs brilliantly, looks great, fits so snuggly, feels soft and nice to wear, and whilst at first I thought it was pricey, now I can see that it is really good value. From autumn through winter and cold spring days, it is fantastic. E.g. I ran 15 miles through hail and snow in the Cairngorms in Scotland last winter wearing my Ashmei long sleeve top and just the soft-shell gilet. (Plus tights etc!) I was warm and happy. And when the temperature is higher, I just open the side zips. I love my gilet!

This is one of the many items I have recently bought from ashmei, I am literally now dressed from head to toe in ashmei when I go out running and I’m so glad I made the decision to spend all that money! I am a firm believer in getting what you pay for and in the case of ashmei this is very true. I have just returned from a wet and windy 8 mile run and never have I felt so comfortable. I had the beanie, long sleeved top, gilet and socks on and all performed well. I get very hot running but there was no overheating this time. It was cold and very wet when I set off but felt nice and warm, and when it stopped raining everything dried quickly and felt comfortable. When I did get a little warm I just opened the zips at the side and cooled down again! I think the silicone strip around the bottom of the gilet is a great idea as one of my pet hates are tops that constantly ride up, so annoying! I think all the items are very stylish and love the colours. Why do some manufacturers think that all women like pink! I thought the handwritten card and the waterproof phone cover in the box was a nice touch, and I love the little bag everything comes in. I am extremely happy with all my items and won’t hesitate to recommend you to all my running buddies. I have already raved about the socks to a work colleague and he is going to buy some! I will now only buy ashmei running gear, Ive been well and truly converted to the benefits of merino wool. Thank you.

I have the black version of this and have run in it all through the very wet and cold winter of 2017/18 that we are only just coming out of in the UK! This is my single favourite piece of running gear and is now something I would not ever want to be without. I don’t like to run in jackets or shells as I just overheat but this provides brilliant protection on cold, windy or showery days but I barely notice I am even wearing it as it is so light and well made. I am someone who feels the cold but nevertheless I don’t like to be bundled up or overheat when I exercise. I wear this over a long-sleeved base layer when it is (feels like) 7 degrees celsius or below, or even wear at slightly higher temps if it is windy or wet. Like they describe, it really is like the protection of a jacket without having to wear a jacket.

When I first started wearing my new gilet last autumn and I was trying to work out what temperatures it would suit me for the sun came out, I got too warm and partially unzipped it. I then got slightly irritated as the asymmetric zip meant the bigger side flapped around my chest until a practical friend kindly pointed out that I should simply fold the flap back on itself inside which made complete sense plus made everything very tidy and neat (I just point this out in case anyone else is as daft as me). I now find that if I’m running and suddenly find myself more sheltered such that I warm up, the zips (and folding) mean that I stay comfortable. This means that this item is very flexible and, unlike some of my running companions, I don’t end up having to tie garments around my waist ever. It really is super comfortable in a range of conditions which is why I love it so much. The wind protection at the front is lovely as I dislike having a cold chest, which reminds me that I have also worn it for cycling where it performs equally brilliantly.

Having worn it for pretty much three runs per week for the past 4/5 months and washed it quite a few times, the silver Ashmei transfer at the inside collar has rubbed off, and one of the plastic bits (for guiding headphone cables) broke off in the washing machine (I use wireless headphones so this is no problem) but the garment itself is in great shape and I anticipate getting many more winters out of it.

A couple of other points are that the pit zips are quite short but useful and the two pockets are quite small but I guess that’s because the garment is a very lightweight item (big plus point!) and it isn’t meant to have loaded bulky pockets. I tend to shove a key in the back pocket and a nose wiping tissue in the front but that’s about the extent of the pocket capacity.

Great gilet vest that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Thank you, ashmei for making my cold runs so comfortable!

I love the thought that has gone into this product and it has performed really well for me so far. I wore it out on a run and worried that it wouldn’t keep me warm enough (a warmer than usual February morning, but February in London nonetheless) but it kept me at just the right temperature. The details are great, and the product is of high quality. My only complaints are that the neck comes up a bit high and rubs my chin, so I fold it back in on itself but it doesn’t always stay; and the side pocket is a bit too small. I don’t need it huge, but it could be a bit bigger. I’d add a bit more reflective material on it as well, but these are small things and I’m really happy with it.
