In the British Isles, we get more than our fair share of rain. In fact, there is a high probability that it is raining right now. It certainly will be on Snowdon’s magnificent Llanberis Path – a must-do trail run if the weather plays nice. So when we started the development of our Rainjacket, we were a little taken aback when we tested the best waterproof jackets on the market. While they may have stopped rain getting in, we found none of them allowed moisture to escape. Under the jacket, runners ended hot and clammy within minutes of a high intensity run and literally drenched by the end of a run.
It was clear we had to develop our own bespoke fabric – one that worked on two levels of dryness: keeping rain out and providing high levels of breathability to allow the runner’s own moisture to be wicked away. The fabric we developed has a micro weave structure using fibres woven so tightly that it is practically impossible for rain drops to penetrate. We then treated each and every fibre with a water repellent silicon coating before the material was woven. This is a fabric so waterproof that you could deep sea dive in it – with the additional bonus that the treatment cannot be washed out, ever. But it is also incredibly breathable.
The result is an ashmei Rainjacket that is incredibly lightweight and can be easily stowed by rolling it up into its own rear vent. It even has a belt loop so you can carry this if the weather turns. The jacket comes loaded with features, such as a 3-in-1 winter cuff to keep hands warm if it turns cold, an offset front zip and bite grip. We have also added a zipped smartphone pocket with earphone cable routing, pit zips and rear venting to keep you cool. Finally to keep you safe, we have added reflective detailing, especially on the back with the signature ashmei race stripe.
Founder Stuart Brooke adds: “This is not a standard, traditional, run of the mill or average rain jacket. Instead it uses a new bespoke technology that keeps you dry from the rain for one hour and really breathes. What’s more, the performance of this jacket will never decrease and you can wash it as many times as you like. Imagine… a rain jacket that keeps you dry from the inside and out.”
