Our versatile all-rounder, the Ultimate Softshell Jacket is the one jacket you should own. Waterproof, windproof front and shoulder fabric protects you from the elements, while the blended Merino rear provides the thermo-regulation required.

Anyone who runs from Autumn through to Spring understands this means a fine balance of protection from the elements without overheating and running in a sweat soaked jacket because it can’t cope with the heat generated by typical runners.

The Ultimate Softshell Jacket tackles this balance head on by using super breathable, lightweight fabrics that protect you from the worst of the weather combined with a rear merino wool blend that keeps you warm but allows enough heat to escape to stop you overheating and therefore sweating.

Every detail of this jacket has been considered in length by our design team from the stretch, weight and performance of the materials through to the hidden hand mitts built into the cuffs incase the temperatures change and you forget your gloves.

A word from founder, Stuart: “My go to jacket. If it’s jacket weather and you know you may be in for a light dowsing of rain – but not a downpour – then this is it for me. The Merino panels on the back of the jacket and sleeves ensure optimal interior climate regulation to keep me cool while the softshell elements keep my core warm and comfortable. The hidden mitts are perfect for mid winter long runs, especially running along the ridgeway in the Chilterns where temperatures and exposure to the elements can be changeable.

All the design features are well noted in other reviews .
Finally, the one I bought 6 or 7 years ago is starting to look a bit worn so I can justify a second to myself. In 45 years of adult adventuring this is one of the best bits of kit I have ever owned. Run, walk, paddle, wild camping, ski , ski tour, swim , scuba ( instant comfort on exiting the sea/lake ) , shopping, cooking & general cold weather comforter.
I have bought one for each of my 4 children.
For any cold weather activity , either on its own or for layering , its a great piece of kit

I purchased this jacket to replace a similar type of jacket from Northface. I’ve had my eye on these for a long time.

The jacket looks and feels exactly how you would expect. It’s very comfortable and appropriately stretchy to accomodate a slim/athletic fit. It’s also quiet – and white colorway is sharp!

The pocket siutation is a bit odd for me. I cannot fit an old iPhone 6 through the opening to get it in the pocket, so I don’t understand what phone is expected to fit. Having a “gel” pocket in the middle back of the jacket is strange. I don’t know how you would access while running and while
wearing. The “key” pocket behind the zipper is also strange. My home key would not fit. For me, none of the pockets can function as intended. However, I could make non-phone use of the phone pocket. All that said, I don’t like to use jacket pockets because I can’t handle things flopping around, so the pocket oddness isn’t an issue for me.

Everything else about the jacket is nearly perfect. I’m 5’11/157lbs and medium is a perfect fit. The arms might be a cm too short when tucking hands in to use the built-in mittens. However, there is enough stretch to make it work. The side-venting is effective. I didn’t expect to have an opportunity to wear this season, but we had an April cold-snap. I wore it twice for hour-long runs at 30F and it was plenty warm and wind resistant. I even got a bit of light precipitation, which shed easily.

I appreciate the offset zipper, even if it is floppy if not zipping all the way. Tucking the flap under worked just fine.

With the cold-snap behind us, it will likely be next winter before I wear again. I’m already looking forward to it!

Great jacket – seems to repel rain well, warm but breathable, great fit – only thing I’d improve is the zip.

I bought this jacket back in 2014 after spending a huge amount of time researching the best waterproof running jackets. It has served me incredibly well ever since. The only reason for reviewing now rather than back then (other than laziness…) was I just got back in touch with Ashmei to ask about reproofing the jacket as, after five years, the shoulders are not as waterproof as they once were.

The team were incredibly helpful and pointed me in the direction of a product to use rather than persuading me to spend money on a newer version. Given there is absolutely nothing otherwise wrong with the jack (which after five years of fairly heavy use is pretty remarkable) that was refreshing.

I’d definitely recommend this jacket. It is very warm (or I get very warm) and so you’d need a very cold and wet day before venturing out in it but it’s also perfectly suited to stuffing it in your backpack as it folds down very small. It’s very breathable if you do want to run in it (just don’t wear too much under it). It’s also super comfortable and very visible for any dark stretches.

This is brilliant piece of kit and worth every penny. I initially bought it to run the Keilder Dark Sky’s marathon in March this year. We started off in the light with a little rain and ended up with finishing in the dark of the winter night. But I was able to start with the jacket on, well ventilated and then kept me warm when the sun went down. No need to faf around putting extra layers on when it started to get colder.

It is rare to find kit that actually does what it says it will do. I have been buying Ashmei kit for a number of years now and have never been let down. Well done and keep it going please.

This is a fantastic piece of kit. The problem with rain jackets in general is that they are typically like running in a crips packet: noisy and clammy ….but not this one. The fit is athletic and is not flapping about in the wind. I have run in -2 degrees to 10 degrees and the quality of the material is superior to other jackets I have purchased in terms of wind-proofing, breathability, and temperature regulation. The only negative is that there is no hood, but the fit, material and pockets (pockets are hard to come by in running gear and there is x2 of them!), along with built in mitts means it cannot get less than x5 stars.

Great running jacket that provides really good visibility. I either wear it as a 3rd layer in the winter or over my shirt when it is less cold, but still need a 2nd layer. They regulate body temp really well, whilst keeping the wind out. Although not a rain jacket they do amazingly well in average rain. And they look great too like all Ashmei clothes, not a bad bonus. I love the idea of the offset of the front zip, but bear in mind that it “flaps” a bit more when not fully zipped, still a big.

  8. AS

The description of the features and functions of the jacket is accurate. I have found it very comfortable to use both in cold and cool conditions. The vents are useful when it gets a bit warmer. As others have said it is very stylish and it is a pleasure to wear. I have worn it for running as well as walking in the hills for the last few months and so far it has worn well. I think it is a very good running jacket and the best I have bought.

  9. Rick

Well what can I say that hasn’t already been said. I’ve long lusted (yes lusted) after this jacket and finally took the plunge just before Christmas. The result – an excellent running jacket made with care and attention to detail for all aspects of running.
ashmei have created a great looking jacket here that doesn’t sacrifice on anything. The fit is great, the reflectiveness is bold and can be seen in almost all conditions, the merino wool does a great job of regulating my body temp and the hand cuffs…oh the hand cuffs – great on those 5am morning runs.
I’ve run at -5 temperatures, drizzly rain, heavy rain, gales and sun and it performs solidly. If you get too hot you either open the side vents or undo the front zipper.
The cable clip was also a big thing for me as I hated it when the wire got tangled or kept hitting my arms while running previously. With this jackets it’s all tucked up inside which means I can just get on with my run and get that new PB.

Would I recommend this to others? Most definitely.
Would I buy more ashmei products? I’m already working on my next order.

Thanks ashmei – keep this up, been a long time coming where a brand exceeds my expectations.

I think I have read every word on the Ashmei Website and I have to say I was finding it hard to believe every claim was true about the product but, I have to hold my hands up and say that the Softshell Jacket (and the running top!) that I purchased for my recent 40th Birthday have been great and have exceeded my expectations!

I’ve now run in it about a dozen times in different conditions (0c – 10c) and found that it really does appear to regulate the heat well. The windproof fabric is in all the right places and the Merino panels again are well positions to help regulate. Well positioned pockets, at first I thought there might not have been enough pocket space but after using the jacket I think it bang on the money, space for keys and phone (and a few gels!) to be kept safe & secure. If you need more pockets then the Cycling jacket might be a better option?? The Reflective trims are all well positioned and it does give me great confidence that I will be seen when light is low or non existent!

If anyone is 50/50 on buying this product then I would whole heartedly say you should click on buy … do it! I was also impressed with the back up of the Customer Service who replied with full answers to a few questions I asked prior to buying.

Thank you Ashmei … I’m sure I will be adding to my Ashmei Range soon.

The sole reason this only gets 4 stars is because I haven’t been able to road test it in the rain (Not my fault, purely the British weather).

3 way cuff again a wonderful piece of design. Excellent cut that fits well and allows you to run with no restriction and without enough excess material to make a sail or two. Keeps the wind out and the warmth in. Excellent reflective detail which was a big reason for me picking this item (that and already owning a few other excellent Ashmei pieces). How many runners/cyclists do you see in luminous yellow, that actually doesn’t make them any more visible? If too hot, just un do the zip a little.

Only marginal complaint is the neck is a little tight – I have an average pronounced adam’s apple. Problem easily resolved by undoing the zip by half a centimetre.

Big big fan of excellent top. Now just need to await on the rain.

Lovely Jacket. I already own the Ashmei Gilet and this jacket is teh same but with arms. Lovely feel, very warm yet cool at the same time. Again the two hidden side vents to cool you down.
The small back pocket is get for a gel or sweets. The sticky rubber gripper at the bottom of the jacket means it doesnt ride up at all it just sticks there. The little built in hand mittens are a great idea and very handy for cool/cold morning runs, and when you warm up you just stop using them and you dont have to worry about putting your gloves down your shorts or tights or lost one during the run.

Reflectiveness on this jacket with the white stripe is the main reason I choose this over the others because I run very early on a Saturday morning to run in the road (when a cyclist would cycle) with less traffic around, but when a car does come up they can see me a mile off. Works just as great for my evening runs and if you are looking at any of the Ashmei kit it does have a sense of style about it. It is not like you are wearing a shellsuit or bin bag which makes loads of noise and looks like everything else on the market.

Only reason for 4 stars is as with the Gilet an upgrade on the zips would make it a 5 star item. I wont be needing to buy the next version as the item is long wearing, and very well made/sitched together.

    Happy Running!
