Summer on Lake Como
This Summer we invited acclaimed an cycling journalist from Rouleur, to explore Lake Como and everything it has to offer. Here is their account...
As the sun gently kissed the horizon, we embarked on an exhilarating journey to uncover the wonders of Lake Como in just one day. The promise of breathtaking landscapes, historic treasures, and the essence of Italian allure beckoned us from every direction.
First stop: Bellagio, aptly known as the "Pearl of Lake Como." Its narrow cobbled streets led us on a charming adventure, flanked by vibrant facades adorned with cascading flowers. At Punta Spartivento, we gazed upon the azure expanse, a vista that whispered tales of timelessness.
Next, we pedaled our way to Varenna, a quaint fishing village cocooned in romance. The waterfront promenade invited leisurely strolls, and the medieval Vezio Castle loomed high, daring us to explore its historic secrets. Villa Monastero, a sanctuary of tranquility with artistic allure, offered respite from the world's bustle.
The heart of Como city beckoned, and we eagerly accepted its invitation. Como Cathedral's grandeur awed us, and the vibrant city center dazzled with its hustle and bustle. A delightful boat tour around the lake revealed the luxurious villas hugging the shoreline, whispers of opulence that transcended time.
Off to Menaggio, where the lake's three branches converged, a strategic base for our day-long escapade. The picturesque waterfront promenade welcomed us with open arms, and Villa Carlotta, an architectural masterpiece, transported us to bygone eras of elegance.
In Tremezzina, a tapestry of architectural wonders and splendid gardens unfolded. Villa Carlotta's neoclassical grandeur mesmerized, while the recently restored Villa Balbiano stood proud, whispering stories of resplendent renewal.
A short boat journey led us to Isola Comacina, the sole island on Lake Como. Amidst lush greenery, the echoes of ancient churches stirred our imaginations, and the promise of a dazzling fireworks display on Saint John's Day left us in awe.
With the day's end approaching, we ascended to Brunate, a hilltop town accessible by a funicular ride. At the summit, the lake, the city of Como, and the surrounding mountains unveiled their beauty in a breathtaking canvas.
In the embrace of Bella Lario, we experienced a whirlwind of sights and emotions, a symphony of natural splendor and cultural riches. Though a day felt too fleeting to uncover every treasure, we departed with lasting memories, yearning for the day when we would once again lose ourselves in the captivating allure of Lake Como.
